The Badminton Skills Assessed
The badminton skills assessment is a target-based evaluation of the junior athlete’s understanding and ability to execute a variety of basic strokes. Athletes must demonstrate proper technique and adjust their power and control to reach the specified target.
- Backhand Short Serve (low over the net and landing close to short service line)
- Forehand Long Serve (high over “opponent” and landing close to baseline)
- Net Shot From Below the Tape (low over the net and tight to the net)
- Lift (aka Underhand Clear) (high over “opponent” and landing close to baseline)
- (Overhead) Clear (high over “opponent” and landing close to baseline)
- Drop Shot (straight, little-to no upward arc, low over net, into forecourt)
- Smash (fast speed, straight, downward into midcourt)
In addition, athletes will be asked to perform the 8 Point Court Movement where the evaluator looks at the ready stance, split step, footwork, racquet presentation and shadow swing, and recovery.
